Frequently asked questions about a lot account

How do I calculate the correct lot size?

Divide the amount you are willing to lose by (stop distance × lot units). Example: a 10,000$ account and a 1% risk means 100$. For EUR/USD with a 20-pip stop, a single lot contains 100,000 units, so the result is 100 ÷ (0.0020 × 100,000) = 0.5 lots.

What is the value of one point?

Point value = lot size × number of lots × point size. In the example, 0.5 lots on EUR/USD equals 0.5 × 100,000 × 0.0001 = 5 dollars per point.

What is the appropriate risk percentage for a single trade?

The common discipline among traders is 1% to 2% of capital in a single trade. Risking more can wipe out a normal losing streak: ten consecutive losses at 2% cost about 18% of capital, and at 10% cost more than 65%.

Why does lot size differ between gold and forex?

Because the lot size differs. The standard forex lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, while the gold lot is 100 ounces. The same price distance costs completely different amounts, which is why a single lot size does not fit all instruments.

When do I need the exchange rate?

When the instrument’s pricing currency differs from your account currency. An account in USD trading EUR/USD doesn’t need a conversion because prices are in dollars, but USD/JPY profits and losses are in yen and must be converted. Ignoring this step inflates the trade size by the exchange rate.

Do you round the result up or down?

Always downward. Rounding up means risking more than you planned, which is the only direction a risk calculator must not get wrong.
